Basal Cell vs. Squamous Cell vs. Melanoma: Know the Difference

A doctor examines a suspicious mole that may be the source of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, but not all skin cancers are the same. The three most common types — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma — differ in how they behave, where they appear, and how urgently they need treatment. Understanding these differences can help you know what to watch for and when to seek care.

At Creative Image Laser Solutions in Brownwood, TX, our experienced team led by medical director Dr. Gary Butka offers full-skin evaluations and evidence-based treatments to help detect and manage skin cancer early — when it’s most treatable.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common and least aggressive type of skin cancer. It forms in the skin’s basal cells, which are located in the lower part of the epidermis. BCC is usually slow-growing and rarely spreads to other parts of the body.

What it looks like:

  • Pearly or waxy bump
  • Flat, flesh-colored or pink scar-like patch
  • May bleed or crust and not heal properly

Common locations:
Sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, and hands

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type and tends to grow more quickly than BCC. It arises from the squamous cells in the upper layers of the skin. While often treatable, SCC can spread if left untreated.

What it looks like:

  • Scaly, red patches or rough bumps
  • Wart-like growths
  • Open sores that don’t heal

Common locations:
Sun-exposed skin, lips, ears, and sometimes areas affected by chronic inflammation or injury

Melanoma

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and requires early detection for the best outcome. It develops in melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment (melanin). Melanoma can spread quickly to lymph nodes and internal organs if not caught early.

What it looks like:

  • Irregularly shaped moles or dark spots
  • Asymmetrical, uneven borders, or multiple colors
  • Changes in existing moles (size, color, texture)

Use the ABCDE rule:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border irregularity
  • Color variation
  • Diameter over 6mm
  • Evolving appearance
