What is Restylane?
Restylane is categorized as a “natural” filler. This is because it is made primarily from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that is responsible for plumping and hydrating the skin. Restylane does this by binding with nearby water molecules. Restylane was the first dermal filler, approved by the FDA in 2006.
Restylane started as a single dermal filler, but the line has since grown to six different fillers each targeting a different area of the face.
Restylane has a long record of success with many satisfied users. More than 1,500,000 treatments have been carried out in more than 60 countries around the world. Restylane is the only company to offer NASHA, or Non-Animal, Stabilized, Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is the first stable, bio-degradable, non-animal hyaluronic acid available and is produced under carefully controlled conditions in our patented process. The results are two choices of gels which can be used individually or in combination.
Where is Restylane used?
Restylane remains one of the world’s most popular dermal fillers (along with Juvederm). Restylane targets marionette lines (the lines that run from the corners of the mouth downward), nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the nose down to the corners of the mouth), and parentheses lines (the lines that frame each side of the mouth and resemble parentheses), and lips.
How long does Restylane last?
Restylane fills wrinkles and creases for 6-12 months. At that point, the body absorbs the now-inactive hyaluronic acid and another injection session will be necessary to maintain your results.
How long a treatment holds its effect is very individual. This depends on many factors, such as your age, skin type, life style and muscle activity as well as on the injection technique. The gel particles in Restylane are absorbed so slowly that you have ample time for maintenance treatments. As the gel breaks down, water takes its place. The less concentrated the gel becomes, the more water it is able to bind. These facts are the main reasons that treatments with Restylane products last so long.
When totally absorbed the gel disappears unnoticed from the body. Most patients choose to have a follow-up treatment six to twelve months after an initial treatment of wrinkles or facial contouring. After lip treatments, a follow-up is normally needed after about six months. You always have the choice to continue or change the combination of treatments, and the procedure can be repeated as often as you like You are always in charge of your looks. Restylane gives you that all-important flexibility.
Is Restylane safe?
Because Restylane is made from hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body, reactions to this filler are almost unheard of. This means patients don’t have to pre-test to see if they will have a reaction to the filler. Restylane has proven to be very safe and has been used millions of times since its 2006 debut.
After injection, the gel binds water and generally remains for many months. Non-stabilized hyaluronic acid products, by comparison, last only a few days or several weeks at most. As a totally non-animal product, there is no risk of transmitting disease or eliciting allergic reaction in patients who are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs.
What are the side effects with Restylane?
The most common side effects are swelling, redness, slight pain, bruising, and tenderness, and itching at the injection sites. Some patients may develop a headache sometime within the first day after their session, but these instances are rare. Any of these symptoms resolve themselves within a week in most cases. Occasionally, lumps or granulomas can form near the injection sites. This side effect can be reversed with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that speeds up the natural degradation of the hyaluronic acid in the filler.
As with all fillers, the expertise of your injector is important to achieve the best results. Dr. Butka and his team at Creative Image Laser Solutions has received special training in the use of various fillers, including the entire Restylane family. There is no downtime after an injection session with any Restylane product.
Do Restylane injections hurt?
Dr. Butka uses a topical numbing cream that is applied 15 minutes prior to treatment and a very tiny needle for Restylane injections. Most patients have very little to no sensitivity.
