What is Sclerotherapy?

80 million Americans have some kind of venous disorder and out of these 80% are cosmetic. Although most Americans do not have a major circulatory disorder, visible veins give the impression of aging and of poor health. The major reason for unwanted veins is heredity, most of these venous conditions are inherited. Women are 3x more likely to develop varicose veins than men. Other factors contributing to the onset of unwanted veins are work related (standing for long periods of time), pregnancy, and trauma (injury) to the immediate area. Sclerotherapy is the process of reducing or erasing the visibility of these unsightly veins

Why should I get rid of unsightly surface veins?

Surface veins such as spider veins are like a sponge that collects and drains into deeper vein channels. This passive collection network is redundant so even when damaged they are not essential to the circulation of the blood in the legs or facial areas. There are so many misconceptions concerning the elimination of unwanted legs because of the way unwanted veins were eliminated in the past. With the advent of new sclerosing agents that create an enzymatic reaction in destroying unwanted veins, the procedure of eliminating unwanted veins has been greatly enhanced and the clearance of these veins have also improved dramatically from traditional methods of only a few years ago.

How is schlerotherapy performed at Creative Image Laser Solutions?

Spider Veins, blue reticular veins and other talengectasias are now easily treated painlessly and effectively and clearance of these veins is easily achieved in one to three sessions. We offer laser solutions for telangectasias of the face and spider veins of the legs as well as injections of spider veins and reticular (blue) veins in the legs.

In the past couple years there has been tremendous improvement in the way to treat unwanted spider and reticular veins in the legs and facial areas. The types of treatment are similar but improvements to the sclerosing agents used in the injections and the choices and improvements of YAG lasers and IPL (Intense Pulse Light) that are more effective than before and also less painful to the patient.

New detergent schlerosing agents have replaced hypertonic saline as the choice to eliminate spider veins and reticular veins by injection. These newer agents also have an anesthetic effect where the patient is more comfortable during and after the procedure. Adverse effects have virtually been eliminated and these newer agents are much more effective in starving the vein of protein and collapsing and eliminating these veins quickly.

YAG Lasers and newer IPL equipment is still the standard for facial telangectasias and below the ankle for superficial veins. IPL allows for larger spot areas to be treated which saves time and allows for variation of treatments for stubborn or non-responsive veins. KTP (Diode-532 Wavelength) lasers still work well, but in combination with injection strategies results are real, long lasting and affordable.

WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR SCLEROTHERAPY?

People who are insecure about the appearance of their spider veins or varicose veins will benefit from sclerotherapy as long as they are in overall good health. However, this treatment is not recommended for patients who have previously suffered from a stroke or have a history of blood clotting. If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, we recommend waiting until after your pregnancy to begin sclerotherapy.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS WITH SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment. Because of this, patients rarely encounter pain during and after treatment. However, just as with any kind of skin treatment, there are a few risks that come with sclerotherapy. These can include bruising of the skin, swelling, and hives following your procedure. In serious cases, sclerotherapy may lead to skin infections or blood clotting, however, with the proper guidance from Dr. Butka and the team at Creative Image Solutions, these complications can be avoided as we optimize patient comfort and safety with any treatment.

HOW WILL SCLEROTHERAPY BENEFIT ME?

Because sclerotherapy involves rerouting blood flow to healthier veins, it helps minimize the appearance of unwanted veins in the legs, but it can also help improve overall blood circulation. Improved circulation can relieve pain, swelling, and discomfort in the legs. In addition, improving the appearance of veins can contribute to increased self-confidence in patients.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE FROM SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that allows patients to return to their normal routines on the same day. We recommended arranging a driver to take you to and from your appointment, but other than that, there is no prolonged recovery time needed. It is recommended to avoid hard exercise and exposure to the sun for two weeks following your treatment. If you experience any pain or discomfort during this recovery period, don’t hesitate to contact us at (325) 641-1927.
