Facial Rejuvenation with a Photofacial
- Posted on: Aug 15 2019
If you didn’t know better, when you hear the word “photofacial” it would be easy to assume the person is talking about the selfies taken in every conceivable situation.
But Amy Beam, our laser aesthetician at Creative Image Laser Solutions, knows better. Amy provides photofacials for our patients to improve their facial skin. She uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacials to counter the effects of sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and more.
What is a photofacial?
A photofacial is a non-invasive procedure where we direct short pulses of intense light onto the patient’s skin. This energy penetrates the skin and causes collagen and blood vessels below the epidermis (the skin’s outer layer) to constrict, reducing redness, sun spots, broken capillaries, age lines, and other issues. Results from IPL photofacials are not immediate, as the improvements show over the next few weeks as the body sheds damaged cells and builds new collagen and skin cells.
Who is right for a photofacial?
IPL photofacials are best for addressing pigmentation issues. So, if you have blotchy, sun-damaged skin with lots of freckles, IPL photofacials are great. They also shrink large pores, remove broken capillaries, and lessen fine lines and wrinkles. Rosacea also responds to IPL treatments. IPL photofacials are not effective for darker skin tones or deeply tanned skin, as the IPL wavelengths cannot differentiate between the age spots/pigmentation problems and the rest of the skin.
If you’re using Retin-A, doxycycline, or other medications, they will have to be stopped for one week prior to your photofacial.
When will I see results from a photofacial?
Results from photofacials at Creative Image Laser Solutions are not immediate. The darker cells from your age spots and sun-damaged skin need to absorb the IPL energy and then begin to slough off. After your treatment, your age spots will first darken, but then they will begin the process of breaking down and peeling off and otherwise being absorbed by the body. This takes a few weeks. Your broken capillaries generally respond immediately, but collagen needs to rebuild to improve large pores and fine lines.
