Enlarged Male Breasts are Not Necessarily a Weight Thing
- Posted on: Jan 15 2018
If you’re down on the Gulf, you often seen men at beach with enlarged breasts. Most people assume the enlarged breasts are simply due to the person being overweight. After all, when women gain weight, they often gain breast size as well, due to increased fat. Reality is different, however. About half the men with enlarged breasts have a condition known as gynecomastia, the clinical term for male breast enlargement. It’s a condition that can really impact a man’s self-esteem, making him avoid things like going to the beach or turning down waterskiing invitations.
Dr. Butka can fix the condition with male breast reduction using laser-assisted liposuction.
What leads to gynecomastia?
The causes of adult gynecomastia are not well understood. That contrasts with adolescent gynecomastia. Up to 70% of pubescent boys have the condition to some degree at some point. In teens, estrogen and testosterone and the changes they cause in the body are the causes. Most teenage gynecomastia passes as hormone levels stabilize.
Middle-aged and older men can also develop enlarged breasts due to hormone changes that come with aging. Often gynecomastia can also develop from taking certain medications:
- Antibiotics
- Heartburn treatment drugs
- Anti-anxiety drugs
- Steroids
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- AIDS treatment drugs
Heavy drinking and smoking marijuana can also lead to gynecomastia.
Breast reduction surgery
Dr. Butka uses laser-assisted liposuction to reduce male breast size. The laser energy helps to loosen and liquefy excess fat, which is then suctioned away by a small cannula. This method doesn’t require extensive incisions, so there is virtually no scarring and recovery is not difficult.
