Clear Up Your Cystic Acne With Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
- Posted on: May 15 2022
Introducing one of the latest, innovative procedures for treating difficult acne cases: Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). This moderate to severe acne treatment combines Levulan ® – a prescription medication used to treat a variety of skin conditions. This medication is combined with oxygen and is activated with the photosensitizer, the blue light device used by skilled cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Gary Butka, on the treated area. In some cases, red light therapy or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) (also known as photo-facial) is used.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Mechanisms
PDT is an acne treatment that was developed with the purpose of destroying the bacteria causing acne inflammation at the bottom of the sebaceous glands. These are small glands producing oil and a fatty substance through the follicular duct and ultimately the surface of the skin.
Three mechanisms make up PDT acne treatment:
- Bacteria triggering acne is inactivated
- Skin is exfoliated to unclog pores and reduce their size
- The activity of the oil glands in the skin is reduced
- Minimal scarring and no incisions
For those experiencing a severe case of acne, Dr. Butka may recommend oral antibiotics to reduce inflammation prior to treatment. The goal of PDT is to medically extract blackheads and acne pustules release. This expedites improves the overall condition of the skin by removing hardened sebum and infected debris causing moderate to severe acne.
Overall Advantages of PDT
Along with improved self-esteem and confidence in your new, smooth skin texture, there are many advantages of PDT over topical medications or oral antibiotics.
PDT is more effective than:
- Retin-A
- Tazorac
- Benzyl peroxide
Post-PDT Procedure Self-Care Instructions
Dr. Butka recommends that you avoid sun exposure by remaining indoors for at least 24 hours after your PDT procedure – except for the period required to travel home.
It is important to follow all instructions carefully for acceptable results, such as:
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap for protection from the sun after leaving the office.
- Use an umbrella for extra protection between the sun and your face.
- Do not aggressively wash your skin or use exfoliants either before or after treatment.
- Do not pick or scratch at the treated area.
