Choosing Between Traditional and Laser Liposuction

A combination of diet modifications and regular physical activity is the first line of defense for anyone trying to lose weight. However, excess fat pockets in certain areas of the body still may not respond. Liposuction may be needed to
totally remove those love handles, muffin tops, and bat wings for a more proportional and cosmetically pleasing body contour.

There is traditional liposuction and laser liposuction. What’s the difference between the two? What are the pros and cons of each procedure? Let’s answer those questions.

Traditional liposuction

Traditional liposuction employs tiny, hollow metal tubes (also known as cannulas) to remove localized deposits of fat. This technique is effective in removing large deposits of fat on the arms, thighs, and lower abdomen. It is possible for traditional liposuction to leave you with sagging skin after surgery. Thus, skin-tightening procedures (e.g. a tummy tuck for sagging abdominal skin) may be needed.

Laser liposuction

The increasing popularity of liposuction can be attributed to the introduction of newer techniques such as laser liposuction, which is less invasive, can provide improved outcomes, and has a shorter recovery time. Laser-assisted liposuction works best on the face, neck, and other areas of the body that can benefit from the laser’s skin-tightening effects.

This type of liposuction has minimal downtime, just a day or two in comparison to the weeklong recovery of traditional liposuction. One issue surrounding laser liposuction is the possibility of skin burns (although the occurrence is rare) following surgery.
