Static vs. Dynamic Wrinkles and Injectables

Wrinkles. Wrinkles. Wrinkles. This unfortunate part of aging affects everyone whether they ever go out in the sun or not. What a minute, you say; a vampire wouldn’t have any wrinkles because they never would have any sun damage.

Ah, but that’s where the difference between the two types of wrinkles comes in. There are static wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that are present all the time. But don’t forget dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that form from repeated muscle contractions. When you frown, squint, laugh, or a host of other actions, the muscles involved with these behaviors create wrinkles on the skin above. Dynamic wrinkles — those are the domain of Botox and its less popular cousin Dysport. These injectables are known as neurotoxins because they are made from the botulinum toxin. When injected in very small amounts into a muscle causing a wrinkle on the skin above, these injectables temporarily paralyze the muscle by blocking signals from the nerve to the brain. Since the brain doesn’t receive the message to contract the muscle, it doesn’t contract and the wrinkle above it doesn’t form.
