How does the SmartSkin Fractional CO2 laser work?
The SmartSkin CO2 laser directs very short pulses of CO2 laser light down onto the treatment areas. The laser energy penetrates the epidermis down into the skin’s second layer, the dermis. The “fractional” aspect of this resurfacing is the beauty of it. The SmartSkin laser creates channels down into the dermis. These channels are tiny and are surrounded by untouched tissue, which goes about healing the adjacent “wounds” immediately. The body perceives these micro-channels as wounds, and it responds by creating new collagen and elastin at the treatment areas, and by shedding old, dull skin cells. This improves the skin over the next weeks and months.

What will I feel like after my SmartSkin laser resurfacing?
For your treatment, we usually apply topical numbing anesthetic. We may give you a pre-treatment sedative, as well. After your treatment, your skin will feel warm and will look as if you have a moderate sunburn. Most patients say the feeling is similar to that of a sunburn. You will have some swelling and redness. We usually recommend our laser skin resurfacing patients to take a week off work to let their skin rest and heal. Your skin will be somewhat pink and sensitive for a period of up to three months, and you’ll need to be very diligent about protecting it from sun exposure.
Your body will instantly begin replacing old, dull skin cells with new skin cells, along with a boost in collagen and elastin production that will continue for months. Within just a few days, you will notice that your skin has more even tone, a smoother texture, and looks healthier overall.
