Fat deposits can be as stubborn as the roots of an old cottonwood tree trying to work their way into your house’s foundation. What is SmartLipo™?

SmartLipo™ uses a laser to assist in the liposuction process. The laser liquefies the fat deposits, making them easier to remove with less damage to surrounding tissue. By doing this, the cannula doesn’t need to be moved about as aggressively under the skin to break up fat deposits. This makes for less downtime and easier recovery than was possible with traditional liposuction.

How SmartLipo™ works

In SmartLipo™, Dr. Butka first injects the target area with tumescent solution, as is used in regular liposuction. This solution is made up of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine. It anesthetizes the treatment area and constricts the blood vessels to make for less bleeding and subsequent bruising.

Next, Dr. Butka makes very small incisions in the area to insert the tiny cannula. But this cannula is different; it is smaller and also has a laser fiber attached. Once inserted under the skin, the laser liquefies the fat cells. Beyond liquefying the fat, the laser also has another benefit — it causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling, and bruising. This makes for faster, easier recovery.

The cannula then suctions out much of the liquefied fat, along with much of the saline/anesthesia solution. The remainder either drains from the incision sites for 24 to 48 hours, or is absorbed naturally by the body.

There is another benefit to using laser energy along with liposuction. When the body senses heat in the dermis layer of the skin (the layer under the epidermis), it assumes there has been a wound. It reacts by immediately remodeling the collagen in the area, which instantly tightens the skin. Plus, it initiates new collagen production to heal the perceived wound. Collagen makes the skin firm and provides structural support. Many other procedures utilize laser energy under the skin to stimulate the body to create new collagen. This also happens with SmartLipo™.

Recovery

SmartLipo™ has a much easier recovery than traditional liposuction. It is casually known as a “weekend procedure” because you can have the procedure performed on a Thursday or Friday and be back at work Monday or Tuesday.
