Identifying the Types of Acne

It is generally assumed that acne occurs only in teens. Actually it affects individuals of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Acne appears in various forms and identifying the specific type is a key to eliminating or lessening breakouts.

Non-inflammatory acne

Non-inflammatory acne, also known as comedones, can appear either as whiteheads or blackheads. Whiteheads are closed comedones in which a thin layer of skin is trapped underneath the pore surface. This prevents the oil in the skin from oxidizing resulting in their whitish appearance. Blackheads, or open comedones, are mainly caused by oxidized oils and melanin (the hormone responsible for skin pigment) build-up.

Inflammatory acne

Acne with inflammation is a result of the body’s immune response to the bacterial imbalance in the skin. The different types of inflammatory acne include the following:

  • Papules – tiny, raised bumps that are red in color and often tender to the touch.
  • Pustules – often larger than papules, with white pus on the tip signifying inflammation
  • Nodules – large painful bumps which extend into the deeper skin layers; the hair follicles tend to be severely clogged in this type
  • Cysts – more severe than nodules as the lesions can last for months and potentially result in acne scarring
