Recent Research Links Vitamin D Deficiency to Depression

It looks like there’s one more reason why you should go out more to bask in the sun  and stock up on tuna, salmon, milk, and Swiss cheese. A 2012 study reveals that low levels of Vitamin D in the body does predispose you to depression. The results of the research published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings,  encourages the general public to regularly check their levels of the sunshine vitamin via Vitamin D screenings like the ones done at the Creative Image Laser Solutions in Brownwood, Texas.

Largest Research Undertaken on Vitamin D Deficiency

The researchers studied the results from roughly 12,600 participants from 2006 to 2010. It is believed to be the largest research undertaken on Vitamin D deficiency.

“The scientists have not determined the exact relationship — whether low vitamin D contributes to symptoms of depression, whether depression itself contributes to lower vitamin D levels, or chemically how that happens. But vitamin D may affect neurotransmitters, inflammatory markers and other factors, which could help explain the relationship with depression,” Dr. E. Sherwood Brown, senior author of the research, further explained.

Daily Vitamin D Recommendation

How much of Vitamin D should you consume daily? The Food and Drug Administration recommends that you consume 200 to 800 IU of Vitamin D on a daily basis. A can of tuna has around 200 IU.
