More stock images - 057 Hot flashes, persistent bloating, and mood swings are the classic signs of menopause. However, for some women, reaching the menopausal age may also mean hair loss. Although it’s quite normal to lose roughly 50 to 100 hairs a day, hair loss during menopause may result in losing significant clumps of hair when washing and brushing the hair.

The underlying cause

The specific cause of menopausal hair loss is unknown. It is believed to be linked to hormonal changes during the period — a sudden decrease in estrogen and elevation of testosterone. Estrogen plays a huge role in hair growth. In addition, an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase is released when testosterone level is higher than estrogen. This enzyme is known to interrupt the hair growth cycle and lead to excessive hair loss.

Stress, genetic predisposition, medications, crash diets, and other hormonal issues (such as thyroid problems) are other factors that may contribute to menopausal hair loss.

Hormone replacement therapy for hair loss during menopause

Hormone replacement therapy has helped many of our female clients deal with hair loss during menopause. However, this treatment should only be considered after thorough assessment and medical evaluation.

At Creative Image Laser Solutions, we combine hormone replacement therapy with natural supplements to treat the root cause of the problem rather than masking the symptoms through prescription medications.
